Niente amore, niente fede / No Love, no Faith (ita-eng) – Don Divo Barsotti

  • John Henry Newman by Sir John Everett Millais

  • “You cannot believe, if you do not love”, Cardinal Newman said (John Henry Newman, theologian, philosopher, English Cardinal, 1801-1890; beatified on 2010), and before him Saint Augustine, because when I do not love, I do not care if also the other wants to be in my life; I do not want to recognize him/her, I do not accept to be chosen by him/her. What is the first action, with which a girl loves the a boy, who chooses her, when she says yes? If you, Rachele, would not accept that Ludovico had chosen you, you would not love him. The first action, with which you love the one that loves you, is to accept his/her love, to accept his/her choice to love you. So faith, which is recognizing and acceptance of a divine choice, already implies love: without love there is never faith.
  • A principle of love is always necessary for faith, it will not be a perfect love, because there is also faith without charity, but there is always a principle of love even before caritas, which already implies God’s presence in the heart of the man, in faith. So you understand that faith is all religious life of Israel and first of all faith is not an absolute beginning, because faith implies a beginning from God instead. Faith remains an answer of man to a divine effort. If God does not intervenes, in whom do you believe?
